Artistic Statement
I find beauty in ordinary places.
Plein air painting has focused my strong interest in landscapes as a subject matter. It allows me to experience the changing light and atmosphere, look for contrasts in movement and stillness in the landscape which brings energy to the painting.
Trees hold a special fascination for me, the texture of bark, the shape of leaves, the interplay of shadows and light.
However, it’s not just the subject matter that moves me to paint, it’s the process of painting directly onto canvas without any sketching or preparation that I enjoy, allowing the image to develop, observing and noting the essence of what I am seeing on the canvas.
I look for contrasts in movement and stillness in the landscape to bring energy to the painting.
My Story
I was born in Mozambique to Portuguese parents and raised in South Africa.
I moved to Dublin in 1994 aged twenty one. In 2008, I settled near Gorey, in county Wexford with my wife and three daughters.
My early paintings were strongly influenced by the work of the great 19th/20th century painters, Corot, Monet, Pissarro and Cézanne. The idyllic location of my art studio in the heart of rural Wexford affords inspiration on my doorstep. I have participated in Art exhibitions in Dublin and Wexford, since 2008.
